-
-
-
- 1. MY DESKTOP WALLPAPER IS DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS
-
- If your Desktop wallpaper image is divided into sections, with one large
- primary image and a number of smaller duplicates of that image, you'll
- need to make a minor change in one of your Windows 95 or 98 settings.
-
- To solve this appearance problem, follow these steps:
-
- Go to your main Desktop background. This is the screen with the START
- button in the lower left hand corner.
-
- Move your mouse anywhere on the background of your Desktop and do a RIGHT
- mouse click. A small window will appear.
-
- Do a LEFT mouse click on the title, "Active Desktop" which appears a the
- top of the small window.
-
- Now click on the small check box labeled, "View as Web Page." This will
- remove the check mark in the box and close this window. Your Desktop
- image should now appear normal.
-
- OR...
-
- Go to your main Desktop background. This is the screen with the START
- button in the lower left hand corner.
-
- Move your mouse anywhere on the background of your Desktop and do a RIGHT
- mouse click. A small window will appear. Click on "Properties."
-
- Click on the tab at the top titled, "Background" - At the base of the window,
- you'll see a choice titled, "Display". Choose "Center" (or "Stretch" if you
- have Windows 98. Stretch will fill the screen with your wallpaper image,
- regardless of your settings)
-
-
-
- 2. HOW DO I MAKE MY WALLPAPER IMAGE FILL THE SCREEN?
-
- Your wallpaper image will fill the screen in Windows 3.1 and Windows 95
- only if your monitor settings are at set at 640 x 480. (See below on how
- to change your monitor settings.) In some later versions of Windows 95
- and in all versions of Windows 98, you can set the wallpaper image to
- full screen, regardless of your monitor settings. Here's how to do it...
-
- Go to your main Desktop background. This is the screen with the START
- button in the lower left hand corner.
-
- Move your mouse anywhere on the background of your Desktop and do a
- RIGHT mouse click. A small window will appear. Click on "Properties."
-
- Click on the tab at the top titled, "Background" - At the base of
- the window, you'll see a choice titled, "Display". Choose "Stretch"
- and then click on "OK".
-
- 3. HOW DO I CHANGE MY MONITOR SETTINGS IN WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS 98?
-
- To change your monitor settings either from or to 640 x 480, follow
- these instructions...
-
- Go to your main Desktop background. This is the screen with the START
- button in the lower left hand corner.
-
- Move your mouse anywhere on the background of your Desktop and do a
- RIGHT mouse click. A small window will appear. Click on "Properties."
-
- Click on the tab at the top titled, "Settings" - Midway down, you will
- see a slider bar which allows you to change your settings. Each
- change will affect the appearance of your desktop.
-
- Do not close the box without clicking on the "OK" button as this
- will not save your changes.
-
-
-
- 4. HOW DO I CHANGE MY MONITOR SETTINGS IN WINDOWS 3.1?
-
- In PROGRAM MANAGER...
- Click on the "MAIN" folder...
- Then Click on the "WINDOWS SETUP" icon.
- A window titled "WINDOWS SETUP" will appear and it
- will list current system parameters. One of these
- will be titled, "Display." The driver listed here
- will probably be for a VGA monitor.
-
- Click on "OPTIONS" in the menu bar at the top of the window.
-
- Choose "CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS."
-
- A window titled, "CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS" will appear. Of
- the driver choices listed under "Display," choose one which
- will provide you with the best image. (To see your choices,
- click on the small "down arrow" to the right of the driver
- description) For the best image, choose the highest full-
- screen resolution possible for your system. In most cases,
- you'll find a driver description similar to the following,
- "Super VGA (640x480, 256 Colors)." Do not choose only 16
- colors.
-
- You may also choose a resolution of "Super VGA
- (800x600, 256 Colors)." This will give you a finer resolution
- image, but it will also include a black border around the
- screen saver image when it appears on the screen. (If you
- want the screen saver to run with a full screen, go ahead
- and choose the 800 x 600 option, but click on the Full Screen
- button in the Copernicus Software screen saver set up screen)
-
- Choose the new monitor driver and click on "OK."
-
- At this point, your computer will try to find the driver you chose
- and install it. However, if the driver is not already in your
- computersystem, your computer will ask you to load the driver and
- this usually involves loading Disk #1 from your set of Windows 3.1
- program disks. Simply load this disk and follow the instructions on
- the screen. If you experience problems installing the new driver for
- your monitor, please call Microsoft's technical support number which
- came with either your Windows software or your computer.
-
- Please read "I Changed My Monitor Driver and Now I Can't Read My
- Screen" below before changing your monitor driver.
-
-
-
- 5. THE IMAGES FLASH BY TOO FAST, REGARDLESS OF MY SETTINGS.
-
- In some versions of Windows 98, the images flash by too fast,
- regardless of your screen saver settings. We have created a "patch"
- for Windows 98 file and you may receive it from us at no charge by mail,
- e-mail attachment or via our website. To get this file, visit our
- website at copernicus-software.com or call us at 800-368-6231.
-
-
-
- 6. ERROR MESSAGE: BAD DLL CALLING CONVENTION
-
- In some versions of Windows 98, you will receive the above error
- message. We have created a "patch" for this and you may receive
- it from us at no charge by mail, e-mail attachment or via our website.
- To get this file, visit our website at copernicus-software.com
- or call us at 800-368-6231.
-
- While waiting for this file, do not uninstall the program by
- using the Windows Uninstall feature. It will delete the screen
- saver, but the Bad DLL message will still appear. To get rid of
- the Bad DLL message while you are waiting for our patch file to
- arrive, simply change your screen saver to a Windows screen saver
- title.
-
- Once the patch file arrives, simply run its install and it will
- solve this problem. Your Copernicus Software screen saver should
- work just fine.
-
-
-
- 7. HOW DO I CHANGE MY MONITOR COLOR SETTING (COLOR PALETTE) FROM
- 256 COLORS TO 16 BIT OR MORE IN WINDOWS 95?
-
- If you're running Windows 95 and your monitor color palette is set
- on 256 colors, you may notice that portions of the screen saver
- images appear "blocky," especially the skies. This can be
- significantly improved by changing your monitor color palette to
- 16 Bit or more. To do so, simply...
-
- Click the right mouse button on the background of your desktop.
- (The blank background portion of the screen with the START button
- in the lower left hand corner.) A small window will appear.
- Click on "Properties," usually located at the base of the small
- window. A new window will now appear and it will have a number
- of "Tabs" across the top. Click on the "Settings" tab. Once
- the Settings window appears, you'll notice your color palette
- about mid-screen. It will probably read "256 Color." Click on
- the small arrow to the right and choose "High Color (16 Bit)."
- Then click on the "OK" button. Do not close the box without
- clicking on the "OK" button as this will not save your changes.
- Your system will then verify that you want to make these changes.
- Confirm that you do and proceed. You should notice that the images
- now appear sharper when the screen saver engages. Changing to 24
- Bit or 32 Bit color will give an even better appearance. However,
- please note that these two settings will require your system to use
- more of its available memory.
-
-
-
-
- 8. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE IMAGES APPEAR DISTORTED?
- For Windows 3.1 or Windows 95
-
- On some computers, screen saver images can become distorted due to a
- lack of memory resources within the computer. (Available RAM) Most
- often, images will become distorted when a lot of applications are
- open at the same time, thus leaving very little in the way of
- available system resources to display full-screen, 4 color images.
- You should notice that your screen saver returns to normal when these
- applications are closed.
-
- Applications or utilities which can tax RAM:
-
- * Spreadsheet or Word Processing Programs
- * Accounting Programs
- * CAD Programs
- * Desktop Shells and Utilities.
- * Transparent applications which operate in the background,
- such as Anti-Virus programs.
- * Programs which are not closed but are simply minimized
- to an icon on the desktop.
- * Internet programs and access - Are you online?
- * Other software applications or games
-
-
-
-
- 9. "WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE IMAGES APPEAR GRAINY?"
- For Windows 3.1 or Windows 95
-
- If your screen saver appears "grainy," you're probably running either
- a VGA monitor (older style - .39 dot pitch) or an SVGA monitor (newer
- style - .28 dot pitch) with an older VGA driver. If you have the
- older VGA monitor, then you will not be able to improve the image.
- However, if you have the newer SVGA monitor, then you will need to
- change the driver from a VGA to an SVGA driver.
-
-
- WINDOWS 95
-
- Click the "START" button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
- In the window box which appears above, choose...
-
- "SETTINGS"
- * Then choose "CONTROL PANEL"
- * Then choose "DISPLAY" (Computer Icon)
- * Then choose the "SETTINGS" tab at the top of the window
- * Locate "Color Palette" and change the setting to "High Color
- (16 Bit)
- * Then click on "OK" at the bottom of the window.
-
- A window will now appear which indicates that you must now restart
- your computer in order for these changes to take effect. Click on
- "YES" to restart your computer.
-
-
- WINDOWS 3.1
-
- In PROGRAM MANAGER...
- Click on the "MAIN" folder...
- Then Click on "WINDOWS SETUP"
- A window titled "WINDOWS SETUP" will appear and it will
- list current system parameters. One of these will be titled,
- "Display." The driver listed here will probably be for a
- VGA monitor.
-
- Click on "OPTIONS" in the menu bar at the top of the window.
-
- Choose "CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS."
-
- A window titled, "CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS" will appear.
- Of the driver choices listed under "Display," choose one
- which will provide you with the best image. (To see your
- choices, click on the small "down arrow" to the right of
- the driver description) For the best image, choose the
- highest full-screen resolution possible for your system.
- In most cases, you'll find a driver description similar
- to the following, "Super VGA (640x480, 256 Colors)."
- Do not choose only 16 colors.
-
- You may also choose a resolution of "Super VGA
-
- If your monitor is an older model, it may be that it is a VGA
- monitor and, as a result, cannot display SVGA quality images.
-
- Please read the following question before changing your monitor driver.
-
-
-
-
- 10. I CHANGED MY MONITOR DRIVER AND NOW I CAN'T READ MY SCREEN
-
- If, when changing your monitor driver, your screen becomes unreadable,
- simply follow these steps...
-
- WINDOWS 95
-
- To change settings in Windows 95 when you can't access your normal
- screens, you must enter the "Safe mode" of Windows 95. This will
- allow you to get into the program, make any changes you want, and
- then get back to the regular Windows 95 program. To access the
- Windows 95 Safe mode...
-
- Turn off your computer and wait 15 - 30 seconds.
- Restart your computer and watch the initial start up messages
- for the following:
- "Starting Windows 95"
- When this message appears, quickly press the "F8" key.
-
- A character based menu screen will appear with following choices:
- 1. Normal
- 2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
- 3. Safe mode
- 4. Step-by-step confirmation
- 5. Command prompt only
- 6. Safe mode command prompt only
- 7. Previous version of MS-DOS
-
- Enter choice #3, Safe mode. A window will appear which indicates
- that you are about to enter the "Safe mode" of Windows 95, and not
- the regular mode of Windows 95. This is what you want, so click
- on "OK" or press ENTER. This will take you to the "Safe mode" of
- Windows 95, thus allowing you to make the necessary changes to
- your settings.
-
- Click the "START" button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- In the window box which appears above, choose "SETTINGS"
- * Then choose "CONTROL PANEL"
- * Then choose "DISPLAY" (Computer Icon)
- * Then choose the "SETTINGS" tab at the top of the window
- * Locate "Color Palette" and change the choice to either
- "256 Color" or "High Color(16 Bit)
- * Then click on "OK" at the bottom of the window.
-
- A window will now appear which indicates that you must now restart
- your computer in order for these changes to take effect. Click on
- "YES" in order to restart your computer.
-
- WINDOWS 3.1
-
- Reboot your computer. During the initial phase of the rebooting
- process, look for the phrase "Starting MS DOS" on your screen.
- Press F5 at the same time this message appears. This will
- immediately take you to the DOS prompt. (As an option, press F8
- instead and walk through your choices. When your system asks if
- you want to start Windows, choose "No" and it will then go to the
- DOS prompt.)
-
- * At the DOS prompt, type in the following to reset your driver:
-
- "CD\" - Then hit "Enter"
- "CD\WINDOWS" - Then hit "Enter"
- "SETUP" - Then hit "Enter"
-
- * This will take you to the set up program for Windows. Follow
- the instructions on the screen to change your monitor driver.
- You can either choose the driver you initially had or try another
- new one. Once you've finished, exit the program and reboot your
- computer again. If your screen is still unreadable, simply repeat
- the steps and choose a different driver.
-
-
-
- 11. HOW DO I MAKE THE IMAGES APPEAR FULL SCREEN?
-
- If your images are not appearing full screen, double click on the
- Copernicus Software icon which appears on your desktop. Within
- the settings window, click on the small box to the left of the
- words "Full Screen Images." Your images will now appear full-screen.
-
-
-
- 12. MY SCREEN SAVER INSTALLS COMPLETELY BUT IT DOESN'T APPEAR
- ON MY SCREEN.
-
- This problem may be caused by your currently installed screen
- saver engaging during the installation of your new Copernicus
- Software program. If your current screen saver delay time is set to
- 1 or 2 minutes, it can sometimes cause problems when it activates
- during the Copernicus Software screen saver installation, a process
- that takes approximately 2 minutes.
-
- To keep your current screen saver from possibly interfering with
- the installation of your new screen saver, set your screen saver
- delay time to 5 minutes or more prior to the installation of your
- new screen saver. After installation, change it back to
- your previous setting. Follow these steps to make this change...
-
- Windows 95
- * Click on START
- * Choose SETTINGS
- * Choose CONTROL PANEL
- * Click on the DISPLAY icon
- * Choose the SCREEN SAVER tab
- * Change the delay time to 5 minutes
- * Click OK and then install the new screen saver
-
-
- Windows 3.1
- * From Program Manager...
- * Click on the MAIN icon
- * Then click on the CONTROL PANEL icon
- * Then click on the DESKTOP icon
- * Then set the screen saver delay time to 5 minutes
- * Click OK and then install the new screen saver
-
- Prior to the installation of the new screen saver, you may
- need to delete any files from the new screen saver which may
- have been installed. To do so, delete the folder using the
- Windows Explorer or the Windows 3.1 File Manager. You may find
- that a file or two will not delete. This is OK. Simply proceed
- with the reinstallation of the screen saver and it will install
- over the top of these files.
-
-
-
-
- 13. HOW CAN I MAKE THE SCREEN SAVER CHANGE TO ANOTHER IMAGE?
-
- In a word...wait. Each image will appear on the screen for
- its predetermined time and then automatically change to another
- image. The images will continue to change until you move your
- mouse or hit a key on your keyboard. To change the amount of time
- an image appears on screen, click on the Copernicus Software logo
- which appears on your desktop and change the time in the "Seconds to
- Wait Between Images" portion.
-
-
-
- 14. ERROR MESSAGE: "CANNOT START APPLICATION."
-
- In most cases, this message appears because the files on
- Disk #2 were not loaded. This can happen due to...
-
- Disk #2 is blank.
-
- Disk #2 was not inserted when the program asked for Disk #2
- during the installation process.
-
- However, in some instances this error message may appear
- because so many different computer programs (applications)
- are open that the computer doesn't have enough available RAM
- to run all these programs AND the install portion of the
- screen saver. Close any open applications and try to install
- the screen saver again. If you're currently online,
- disconnect and close that application, as well.
-
-
-
-
- 15. I'M HAVING PROBLEMS INSTALLING THE SCREEN SAVER.
-
- Problems with the installation of the screen saver can be caused
- by a variety of things. Please note the following when installing
- the screen saver...
-
- When inserting Disk #2 during the installation, insert the disk
- AND THEN hit enter. Do not hit enter or click on "OK" and then
- insert the disk into the drive.
-
- Do not type anything (such as a:\install) when you insert
- Disk #2. Simply insert the disk and hit enter. There is a command
- line for entering information, but please leave it blank.
-
- You may wish to set your current screen saver delay time to 5
- minutes or more when installing your new screen saver. Once it is
- installed, change it back to whateveryou choose.
-
- Make sure you insert Disk #2 when the installation program asks
- for Disk #2. Do not become distracted and leave in Disk #1.
-
-
-
- 16. THE SCREEN SAVER STARTS, THEN IMMEDIATELY STOPS IN WINDOWS 95.
-
- This situation is caused by a function called Screen Scan in later (OSR2)
- versions of Windows 95, as well as early versions of Windows 95 which also
- used Microsoft Plus.
-
- In post OSR2 versions of Windows 95, there is a function called Screen
- Scan which scans your hard drive whenever your system becomes idle.
- Unfortunately, when your system becomes idle, this is also when our screen
- saver starts to engage. As a result, as soon as the screen saver engages,
- the Screen Scan starts. Once the Screen Scan starts, the screen saver
- recognizes this as activity on your system and, as it should, disengages.
-
- To get around this, follow these steps:
-
- Do a RIGHT mouse click anywhere on your desktop background. A small
- window will open.
- Choose PROPERTIES and another window will open.
- Then click on the Screen Scan tab at the top of the window and another
- window will open.
- Towards the top of the Screen Scan window, unclick the box at the phrase,
- "Enable Scanning While in Screen Saver Mode."
- Now click the OK button. Do not simply close the window as this will
- not save your settings.
